GEPMI Trainees Graduate in a Historic CeremonyNov 26, 2012
In a first for Zimbabwe, 73 senior policy makers involved in budgeting planning, policy making, human resources and gender mainstreaming graduated from the inaugural three-week Gender Responsive Economics Policy Management Initiative (GEPMI) course, developed by UNDP in collaboration with leading regional and international experts.
Commending the graduates for their successful completion of the course, Ms. Caroline Matizha, acting Secretary for Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development termed the GEPMI programme as significant in the country because it will “definitely revolutionize the whole discourse of gender mainstreaming in Zimbabwe as each and every sector of Government will take it upon itself to ensure that the principle of gender equality is enshrined in their policies and programmes.”
“No country can meaningfully and sustainably develop when the majority (52 %) remains passive players” noted Matizha.
The graduation ceremony, described by Mr. Alain Noudehou, the UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative as “another milestone and symbolic of the commitment that the Government attaches to the promotion of gender- aware economics” was held in Harare on 26 November, 2012. Trainers included experts from the UNDP Regional Center in Dakar, Senegal, as well the universities of Makerere in Uganda and South Africa’s Limpopo University.
“It is also my hope that the Government of Zimbabwe, with the technical assistance of UNDP , the UNCT and other development partners will concretize the modalities to institutionalize the GEPMI at a public academic institution” said the UN RC, adding that the United Nations Country Team and the Government, in collaboration with NGOs and development partners have set to promote the promulgation and implementation of relevant laws and policies to sustain the achievement of MDG 3 on gender equality.
GEPMI is a breakthrough programme whose overarching objective is to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by making economic policies and poverty reduction strategies deliver to women and men, girls and boys equitably.
It comprises of a three-week Short Course on Gender-Responsive Economic Policy Management to provide middle and senior level government policy makers, parliamentary staff and civil society organizations (CSOs) with hand-on skills to enable them to address the most critical gender issues in all aspects of economic planning and management. The course’s 12 modules address gender issues in all aspects of economic development (economic analysis, poverty reduction, statistics, employment, unpaid care work, macroeconomics, trade, taxation, gender responsive budgeting, etc.).
GEPMI-Tailored country level advisory services and capacity building workshops to respond to countries’ specific development planning needs. These services are delivered by UNDP’s team of regional experts whose expertise is assured through regular training and continuous knowledge sharing. Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda, Cameroun, Mauritania and Zimbabwe have benefitted from such services
GEPMI’s implementation started in Africa as GEPMI-Africa and has since been exported to the Asia and Pacific region and the Arab States.
