The Role of Human Rights in Responses to HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria

Respect for and the protection of human rights are paramount to the successful implementation of public health programmes and by consequence, human development. As the 2010 United Nations outcome document on the MDGs states, “ The respect for and promotion and protection of human rights is an integral part of effective work towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals”. This discussion paper elaborates on the crucial role that human rights play in improving the effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability of responses to HIV, Tuberculosis (TB) and malaria.
